The Architectural Journey: Houston through an iPhone Lens

Hello everyone,

I'm Marco Mendez, typically known as an Architecture and Interior Photographer based out of Greensboro, North Carolina. However, recently, I had the opportunity to shift gears a bit. My journey took me all the way to the Lone Star State - Texas, and specifically, to the city of Houston. On this trip, I decided to do something a little different, to capture the city in a novel way, from the perspective of an everyday observer, armed not with my usual Canon EOS R5, but with the ubiquitous tool of our time - an iPhone.

As a professional Architecture Photographer, it's my job to see cities differently, to capture their personality, their spirit, and their structure. However, this trip was about more than just work. It was about engaging with the city, about exploring Houston's beautiful architectural concepts, and documenting the interactions of the buildings with downtown Houston. It was about experiencing the city as a human being, not just as a Commercial Photographer.

Usually, the precision and detail of the Canon EOS R5 is my go-to for capturing the intricate elegance of architectural and interior photography. It's an absolute powerhouse of a camera, and I love it. However, this time I wanted to capture more candid moments - moments that tell the story of the city, moments that bring architecture to life.

The results? I was impressed, and I think you will be too. My iPhone enabled me to seize spontaneous shots, to freeze in time the candid moments that encapsulate the essence of Houston. The photographs are raw, honest, and truly encapsulate the spirit of the city.

As an Interior Photographer, I'm always amazed by the stories and energy of designs. Every detail paints a vivid picture. In Houston, these stories were exceptionally fascinating. The city’s architectural landscape is a melting pot of styles and concepts, blending modern design with historical charm.

But it wasn’t just the architecture that caught my eye. The way the people of Houston interact with their architectural environment brought a human element to the images that I found deeply engaging. The bustling streets of downtown, the quiet corners of the parks, and the vibrant energy of the city, all frozen in time through my lens.

To my fellow architects, interior designers, and photography enthusiasts, I highly recommend exploring your city with just your phone camera. There's a certain joy in capturing the candid and impromptu moments that a city has to offer. The experience was humbling and an excellent reminder that the best camera is the one you have with you.

Stay tuned to this space as I share more of my experiences and learnings from this journey. Until then, remember to see the beauty in every corner, capture it, and share it with the world. After all, we're not just photographers, we're storytellers.

Until next time,

Marco Mendez, Architecture and Interior Photographer in NC.
